Loving Rihanna's Red Curls!

The much hated "before" red
You all know I was not impressed when singer, Rihanna started sporting candy apple red hair, that had her looking more like Ronald McDonald, than the superstar she is.  I think I might be a hairstyle or two behind (girl is keeping me on my toes!).  I was impressed, however, when I saw that she toned down the color from the garish red she'd been wearing,  to this fabulous violet/red shade.  I'm also loving the curls!

To achieve her look, I would start with a Miss MyMy Medium curl 14' inch wig, or Medium curl extensions. The hair will have to be colored to a rich red shade.  I like Wella in Chili Red, or Claret.  Our curly hair, like all our hair, is natural; and that means the curls will hold a curled style much better.   Curly hair wants to be curled.  I would start by spraying some holding spray, then taking small sections at a time and spiral curling with a 1/2' barrel curling iron.  Spray with some finishing spray, run some Hair Essence hair serum through with your fingers, and separate the curls with your fingers.  Voila!  Ready to hit the town!

Miss MyMy Likes... FHI's Domed Iron

I've decided that periodically, I will start listing some of the products or tools that I use regularly at Miss MyMy and that I like a lot.  I firmly believe that getting the right look starts with using the right tools.

This domed iron by FHI Heat is one of my favourite tools of the trade.  I use it when I want to achieve some big bouncy curls.  It really gives a very different kind of curl.  It's also great for flipping the hair or just tucking it under.  Both long and short hair wearers can use it, as it's very versatile.

"There is a huge advantage to having already curved plates, which allows users to visualize the degree of curl they are going to achieve using this iron," states Les Haverty, Artistic Director for FHI Heat, Inc., a manufacturer of ceramic styling irons since 1996 and leader in professional quality hair tools.

Some Solutions for Those Looking for Tight Curl Products

While our Miss MyMy curly hair products are being formulated, we've been forced to seek out alternatives for our Tight Curl wearers (like myself ;-)

Catwalk Curls Rock Curl Amplifier by TIGI is one of my recent favs.

I find this product provides the curl definition and hold that's so important when dealing with tight curls.  One thing we have to mention is that TIGI has recently changed the packaging on their Catwalk line.  We've tried the product in the new packaging and noticed a VISIBLE difference in the way my hair behaved.  When I used the newly packaged Curl Amplifier, my hair was frizzier, had less curl definition, and their was a strange white residue left on both my hands, and my hair.  I've mentioned it to several retailers, and some have quite adamantly told me, that no, the formulation hasn't been changed, only the packaging.  I beg to differ.  We've been running around the city (both Toronto and Miami) trying to buy up as many of the products we can find in the old packaging.  If you're out about about and you see it, I would suggest you get it.

STYLING YOUR TIGHT CURL HAIR
After washing hair and thoroughly combing out, I comb through about 2 pumps of the Curl Amplifier.  Then I add a generous amount of Miss MyMy Hair Essence Serum, paying attention not to skimp out on the back of the head.  This next step is super important, and often over-looked, SCRUNCH...SCRUNCH...SCRUNCH those curls.  AND STOP!  Avoid the temptation to run your fingers through those locks.  The more you fuss with it, the frizzier you risk it being.  Dry using a diffuser, or allow to air dry.  For longer hair, you may want to loosely clip hair on top your head, so the natural weight of the hair isn't stretching out the curls as it dries.

2011 the Year of the Curl?

Maya wearing Miss MyMy Tight Curl Fijian hair
I'm beginning to think that 2011 is shaping up to be the Year of the Curl.  I've been wearing a tight curl since the fall, and I have started to notice that quite a few of my clients have opted to go the same route.  We even have one client currently rocking a 28' Tight curl full-lace wig, and loving every minute of it!  She called to give us some feedback, and said that she's receiving many compliments on her new hair, as well as several assumptions that it's her natural born hair.  Hey, you know how I feel about that - if it's on my head, and I have the receipt to prove it, it's MY hair!

I think a lot of people are at first intimidated by the tight curl, because there is a bit more maintenance and product use involved.  I think that once you get the hang of it, you'll find that it's a lot easier to style than you thought.  The payoff is, a very unique fashion-forward look.

TEXTURIZING YOUR TIGHT CURL

If you find, after getting your tight curl, that the curl is a bit too tight for you too manage, you still have the option of applying a texturizer to the hair to loosen and smooth the curls.  I've done it to my own 28' tight curl, and it now behaves a whole lot better.  I would recommend that you have this professionally done.  You won't be too happy if you over-process the hair, and end up with stringy ends :-(

USING THE PROPER PRODUCTS

It's important to keep your curls clean and moisturized.  Miss MyMy Shampoo and Conditioner is specially formulated to clean, but not dry out your hair.  Using an anti-frizz, curl defining product is also important.  It helps to tame your curls and keep the frizz to a minimum.  We're currently working on formulating our own curly hair products, so I'll keep you posted on that!

8 Tips to Make your Hair Color Last Longer (Especially Reds!)

The number one complaint from women with colored hair, especially red, is that their hair color quickly fades.  We know it's natural for fake pigment to leave the hair after some time, but what about you ladies, who, no matter what you do, your hair looks dull after only one week?
Miss MyMy uses Wella professional products to color all their extensions and wigs so the following tips are based on Wella products.
Here are 8 tips to keep hair from fading:
Tip No. 1: Always have your hair color applied to clean hair.
Yes, I know about the old wives tale that your color takes better on dirty hair. Well that's actually not true,  or rather,  no longer true.  Back in the days when  chemicals in hair color were much stronger a build-up of natural hair oils helped protect the hair from damage.
Hair color is now much more refined and less damaging to your hair. The color penetrates better and last longer on clean hair.
Tip No. 2: Try Semi-Permanent Color by Wella Color Touch.
Wella's reds in particular are out of this world. Not only do they have every shade of red, the colors are shiny and sexy. My favorite shade by this brand is 7/4, Rage.
Tip No. 3: Avoid washing your hair 48 hours after getting your hair colored.
Color molecules are large, especially reds, and aggravating the cuticle soon after getting your hair colored with hot water and shampoo can release pigment prematurely.
Tip No. 4: Do not do hair treatments the day you have your hair colored.
This can also allow color molecules to be released.
Tip No. 5: Wear caps when going to the tanning salon.
Tanning just like the sun will cause your hair to fade so you need to protect your hair when you tan.
Tip No. 6: Wear hats or UV protection on your hair in the sun to prevent fading.
The sun can be damaging to hair, so protect hair when hanging out in the sun all day.
Tip No. 7: Get a clear or red cellophane gloss one week after having your hair colored.
Cellophanes are vegetable colors that are safer than henna and fade gently without the residue. It is applied to the hair, then you are placed under the dryer for 20 minutes. This seals the color and gives your hair great shine.
Tip No. 8: Don't use harsh shampoos.
You spend a lot of money on your hair color. It's time to invest in a good shampoo and conditioner as well!  I'm always amazed at people who pay a lot of money on their hair, (whether it is growing from their head or not),  and then skimp out on cheap products.  Buy some good quality shampoo and conditioner that is specially formulated for colored hair.  It may cost a little more, but in the long run, you'll only end up saving by stretching out the time between your color job.
Hope this helps!

Happy New Hair!!!

I hope you all had a wonderful Holiday!  Today is our first day back, as we were closed for a few weeks.  I was able to make it to a couple dinner engagements, and parties.  I spent a lot of time with my family, which was great.  I ate way too much, which was not so good. (although at the time it was so good LOL)  I had the opportunity several times, to discuss my Miss MyMy hair, which I'm always very open about.  If you know me, you know I'm wearing hair.  I totally own it.  It is, after all, my business.

During one dinner party, the cousin of a very good friend mentioned that she cannot wear extensions, and would love to.  She said she has worn extensions in the past and has had allergic reactions along her neck, shoulders, and ears.  I told her it sounds to me that she might have a hair dye allergy, and to bear in mind, when the lower quality hair extensions are being colored, you can guarantee they are doing so with the lowest quality hair dye available.  I explained that Miss MyMy hair extensions have not been colored, permed, or relaxed.  Our hair comes in it's natural dark brown color (sometimes with a couple grays, even!)  If you are like this lady, I want you to know there is good hair on the market, and there is hair that you can wear if you suffer from an allergy to hair dyes .  Miss MyMy Hair!

Natalie has a severe allergy to hair dyes, and for the past 10 months, has had NO reaction whatsoever to her wig.  Her unit is sewn in, so she wears her wig 24/7.  She says the only reaction she's been having while wearing her wig, has been a few catcalls from men driving by, and random friends requests from strange men on Facebook!

Heath Canada Recalls Hair Smoothing Products

Miss MyMy tries to stay on top of what is going on in the industry and pass this information along to others who may be interested. The following information was sent to us, as is the case with some of our information, from a follower who thought we would want to know. Since some of our clients choose to treat the hair they purchase from us for the same reasons people treat the hair that is growing from their head, this information is important.

We took the time to verify the following information with Health Canada as well as speaking to a top Toronto stylist and distributor of Miss MyMy, Gloria Mcleod, from Analysis in Hair on her thoughts. The following is what she had to say.
" As with all chemical products and some natural ones there will always be those who have a sensitivity. Many of my clients have a huge sensitivity to perfume, grass and other common things. In order to minimize any sensitivity and/or adverse reactions to formaldehyde I  protect my staff and clients by using La Brasiliana, which has a formaldehyde value of 0.0% well below the government regulated 0.2%  and always doing a patch test to determine if there are any sensitivity issue".

If you have any questions for Gloria concerning her services and other treatments she offers from La Brasiliana please feel free to contact her at 905 507-3535

Dec. 17, 2010- Health Canada announced on December 16 that it’s issuing a recall on ten “stop sale” hair smoothing products. The levels of formaldehyde found in these products exceed the limit according to Health Canada. The Allied Beauty Association has notified Salon Magazine that it “fully supports safe products and a safe workplace but also believes that its members are entitled to the benefit of sound science and current testing methods.” Questions have been raised over Health Canada’s methodology of testing and whether they’re using outdated information. The ABA says, “All we are asking is that Health Canada ensure that its testing methods are based upon sound science and, if hazards truly exist, then cosmetologists and the public are entitled to full protection.” Professional industry manufacturers and distributors are currently in conversation with Health Canada to review their testing methods. For now, distributors will likely be receiving instructions on how to handle this recent recall and will pass on the information to their salons.
The ten products being recalled by Health Canada are:
1. Brazilian Keratin Treatment by Marcia Teixeira
2. Advanced Brazilian Keratin Treatment by Marcia Teixeira
3. Chocolate Extreme De-Frizzing Treatment by Marcia Teixeira
4. Keratin Complex Smoothing Therapy by Coppola
5. Global Keratin Taming System Strawberry by Global Keratin
6. Global Keratin Taming System with Juvexin Strawberry Resistant by Global Keratin
7. Global Keratin Taming System with Juvexin Strawberry Light Wave by Global Keratin
8. Pro-Collagen RX Keratin Treatment
9. IStraight Keratin (Advanced Keratin Treatment) by IBS Beauty
10. Brazilian Thermal Reconstruction by Cadiveu
